Making Aberdeenshire more active

Making Aberdeenshire more active

The council’s Community Planning Partnership held an awareness event recently to focus on the Scottish Government’s Active Scotland Outcomes Framework.

The framework describes the key outcomes desired for sport and physical activity in Scotland over the next ten years.

The aim of the event was to focus on:

  • Who are those most likely to be inactive?
  • What the barriers to being active are?
  • What can be done to bring down those barriers?
  • Raise awareness of the benefits of physical activity,
  • Question why physical inactivity remains a challenge in Aberdeenshire
  • Collectively identify priority actions to enable people living in Aberdeenshire to become and remain more active.
Fact: Physical inactivity results in around 2,500 premature deaths in Scotland each year (seven a day). No wonder physical inactivity should be regarded as a major public health priority in Scotland today.

Susan Forbes, Health Improvement Officer, explained: “The event was a great success and very well attended. It was a great opportunity for people from the local authority, health and the third sector to come together and contribute to this very major health challenge. We have now gone through a priority setting process and identified the key actions that we must all focus on to make a difference and increase physical activity in Aberdeenshire.”
