Earth Hour 2017

Article Body:

Earth Hour is a global movement to raise awareness about climate change and environmental protection, first organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007. This year it takes place on 25th March from 8.30-9.30pm.  Individuals and organisations will take part all around the world by switching off their lights for Earth Hour.  Since it first began 10 years ago, the number of countries taking part has grown to an incredible 178 countries and territories.

Last year over 160 Scottish national and local landmarks were turned off.  This year Aberdeenshire Council has been awarded a ‘Super Local Authority’ badge for its commitment to Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is not only about how much energy is saved during the hour.  It’s a chance to put the spotlight on the issues facing the planet, and is a brilliant reminder that together we can make change happen.  Small changes CAN make a big difference.

Individuals and organisations can take part in Earth Hour by switching off lights, planning events, and celebrating in their own way.

Ideas of things to do for Earth Hour include:

  • Go to a local Earth Hour event – The Aberdeenshire Ranger Service is hosting a FREE event at Delgaty Woods (email formartine.ranger@aberdeenshire.gov.uk for more information)
  • Host an Earth Hour party enjoying the darkness in the company of friends and family
  • Play games by candle light or have story telling time
  • Go for a family night hike and do some star gazing
  • Listen and look out for nocturnal animals visiting your garden
  • Create a pledge of how your family will live more sustainably
  • BE CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN WITH IT!
