Aberdeenshire schools coming top of the class in national competitions

I was very pleased to hear of the success of Alford Primary School in the Generation Green Energy Performance which has won them £150,000 towards an ‘energy makeover’ for the school. Primary 7 pupils travelled down to London last Thursday to take part in the competition, which saw them design an eco-friendly house and perform as ‘The Alford Primary Eco-Boogie Team’. The youngsters’ dance moves, performed on a specially-constructed dancefloor which converted the pupil’s footsteps into energy, won over the judges and the pupils apparently celebrated by running in the fountains at the Olympic Stadium!

Strachan School, near Banchory, received the Social Enterprise in Education Award for their canteen-based tearoom, created and ran by pupils in the wake of their village shop and church closing. Serving tea, coffee and snacks and providing a community meeting place, all the profits from the enterprise are going towards the construction of a wheelchair ramp; to allow access to the school’s eco-garden for two primary one pupils.

It is thrilling to know that the young people of Aberdeenshire are already leading the way when it comes to green issues, social enterprise and community values, creating truly admirable projects and impressive accomplishments that will serve them and the Shire well in the years to come.
